Megan Barnett, Eating in quarantine

Healthy “comfort food” to outsmart cravings

Wow, what a month. Kids at home, work at home, husband at home, me at home…and a lot of walking around not knowing what I’m supposed to be doing with myself. Everyday brings its own moments of joy (not having to pack lunches) sprinkled with nervous breakdowns (will I ever be alone again?)

As timing would have it, we sold our house in February and moved into a temporary townhome in a very urban setting. We lost a yard and neighborhood right in time for quarantine so instead of playing outside, we are doing family workouts in the small living room and tucking in early for movies at night.

While the COVID-19 crisis definitely sparked a comfort-eating marathon at my house, if I’m being honest, the prior 60 days of selling our house and moving had already set that ball in motion. Over the last few months, my carb intake doubled and my exercise was cut in half. That led to 5 extra pounds, low energy, tight jeans and poor sleep…yuck. Two weeks ago, I drew a hard line in the sand and moved back to my appropriate-carb-for-my-energy-output anti-inflammatory diet with some strategic replacements.

Kale Chips instead of popcorn

Paleo Banana Bread with Lily’s Chocolate Chips and Flax Eggs instead of sweets

Japanese Noodle Bowl instead of rice

Ragu with butternut squash noodles instead GF pasta

Chicken Soup with Kim & Jake’s Bread instead of whatever else I was eating at night.

Thai Asian Salad instead of salty snacks

Gravel Roads Wine …ok, this wasn’t a replacement but this is my husband’s natural wine importing company that only sources “natural” (3 ingredient) and small producing Italian wine with very low sulfites and low sugar so I can indulge occasionally and not pay the price the next day.

Even with the adjustment, I also needed a quick reset so my husband and I did another round of my 5-Day Detox with tailored recipes and Biotics BioDetox Supplements which usually yields about 7# weight loss for me and 10# for my husband. We sleep well, have tons of energy and cut sugar cravings. Its a small and short price to pay to get back on track.

This is not a time to be hard on ourselves but it’s also not a time to throw in the towel. We need strong immune systems, plenty of exercise, great nutrition, solid sleep and stress management skills to maintain resilience. I am finding there is a balance between comfort and kindness in my health routine. I hope you are finding that too! -Megan
